Family and Consumer Sciences' central focus is the family unit. Society depends on two constants for its health and survival. These constants are work and family structure. The only discipline that focuses on preparing students for both work and family life is FCS.
The content focuses on the work of the family and how the functioning of components such as relationship skills, human development, health and wellness, financial competence, leadership, and the use of critical thinking to solve practical problems determine the overall health of the society.
Students not only have the opportunity to explore different careers, gain employability skills such as communication, team work, and critical thinking but they have opportunity to prepare for one of the many careers in clusters such as Human Services, Education and Training, and Hospitality and Tourism. While these are their major employers, a large number of graduates are found in the Arts, Manufacturing and Sales clusters and designers, textile researchers, and buyers.
An integral part of the Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum, is the student organization, FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America). FCCLA is the only student organization with the family as its central focus. FCCLA leadership and community service opportunities allow members to develop skills that can be applied in the family, community, and workplace throughout their life. These skills are character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation. Over 14,000 Missouri students participate in FCCLA each year.
