Chamber Choir
The Chamber Choir is the most select group at Lafayette High School. This is a group of the best students, singers, and citizens at LHS. Consisting of both male and female singers, students are challenged to be as independent as possible, while at the same time contributing to the overall group sound.
This choir performs at various community events, middle schools, elementary schools, retirement benefits, and other Saint Joseph School District functions.
Students in this class are the leaders of the choir department and the school as a whole. Many of the past student body presidents, student council members, cheerleading captains, and basketball captains have been in this choir. Many of these students will go on to be professional musicians or music teachers. The expectations are high in this class and students will gain the aural skills to find out what is wrong and how to fix it.
The Chamber Choir meets 7th hour.
Concert Choir
The Lafayette Concert Choir has a strong tradition of excellence. This choir has traveled to Jefferson City, Maryville, and Kansas City just to name a few. In 2011, the choir performed at the Missouri Music Educator's Conference at the Tan-Tar-A resort at Lake of the Ozarks. This is an auditioned mixed choir. The vast majority of the students in this class have taken choir for many years. Students will learn advanced sight reading skills, produce a professional-like tone quality, learn valuable communication and leadership skills, will continue to develop solo voices and ranges, and master the performance skills used in a professional setting. Students will sing a variety of works including modern pop and rock, contemporary choral pieces, and master choral works. Every student takes ownership of his or her part.
Concert Choir meets 6th hour.
Bel Canto Singers
Bel Canto is a latin phrase that means "beautiful singing". This group is an auditioned women's choir. This ensemble focuses on building a foundation for creating choral music. Students will continue to build on fundamental technique as well as learn mid-level sight reading, expand their vocal ranges, begin to create a more mature sound, and learn music leadership skills. We sing a variety of literature but we mainly focus on modern and master choral works. This ensemble sings in three to four parts.
Bel Canto meets 5th hour.
Men's Choir
Men's Choir is the newest choir at Lafayette High School. No audition is required to join! This choir is open to any male student. Men's choir is a beginning choir specifically geared toward inexperienced singers. In this choir, students will learn fundamentals such as tone production, basic music reading skills, blend, balance, vowel shapes, and posture. We will sing a variety of literature all written for men's voices. Men's Choir sings everything from sea chantys and spirituals to love songs. This choir performs at three concerts a year, including the spring Standing Room Only show.
