Art
The Art Cup is awarded to the student who has achieved the highest grade point average in Art, accumulated the highest number of points in art and who meets the following criteria:
- The student has no grade lower than a B in art.
- The student has completed at least 8 semesters of art.
Through the participation in art exhibitions and contests, students can acquire points based on the following scale:
- 1 point received for contest participation
- 2 points received for Honorable mention
- 3 points received for Third place winner
- 4 points received for Second place winner
- 5 points received for First place winner
In the event of a tie, the cup recipient will be determined through the collaboration of the art department instructors.
Communication Arts
The English Language Arts Cup will be awarded to the student who has earned the highest grade point average in ELA classes and has completed eight semesters of ELA classes, including at least one of the following: DC English 104, TAG, or *AP ELA12.
The following criteria will be used to break ties and will be considered in the order listed below:
- Number of semesters of English Language Arts classes.
- Quarterly English Language Arts grades.
- Overall grade point average in English Language Arts.
Family and Consumer Sciences
Industrial Technology
The Industrial Technology Cup will be awarded to the student who has completed the most semesters of Industrial Technology and who has earned the highest grade point average in Industrial Technology and who has met the following requirements:
- The students must have completed six (6) semesters of Industrial Technology classes.
- The student must have no semester grade lower than a "B" in any Industrial Technology class.
The following criteria will be used to break ties and will be considered in the order listed below:
- Contest results in School, District and State Industrial Technology contests.
- Quarterly grades in Industrial Technology.
Instrumental
The Instrumental Music Cup will be awarded to the student with the highest grade point average in band classes and who has met the following requirements:
- The student must have completed six (6) semesters in band.
- The student must have participated in a solo or ensemble for three (3) years at the District Contest.
In the event of a tie, the following criteria will be used to break ties and will be considered in the order listed below:
- Ratings in District and State Contests.
- Selection to All-District and All-State Band.
Mathematics
In the event of a tie, the quarter grades will be the determining factor. and who has met the following requirements:
- The student must have completed seven (7) semesters of Mathematics classes and be enrolled and currently taking their eighth (8th) semester of math.
- The student must have taken Calculus.
In the event of a tie, the quarter grades will be the determining factor.
Military Science
The Military Science Cup will be awarded to the student who has earned the highest grade point average in J.R.O.T.C. classes, provided the grade point average is not lower than "3.0". The following points will be considered in any class grade given in J.R.O.T.C.: appearance, performance of duty, military traits and military principles of leadership. The student must also have met the other following requirements.
- The student must have completed seven and one-half (7½) semesters in J.R.O.T.C. at Lafayette High School.
- Any semester grade lower than a "C" will disqualify a student.
The following criteria will be used to break ties:
- Participation in Best Drill Squad.
- Participation as Best Drill Cadet.
- Participation in Honor Guard.
- Participation as Military Police.
- Participation on Rifle Team.
- Participation in Saber Guard.
Orchestra
The Orchestra Cup will be awarded to the student with the highest-grade point average in orchestra class and who has met the following requirements:
- The student must have completed six (6) semesters of orchestra classes.
- The student must have no semester graded lower that a "B" in any orchestra class.
- The student must have participated as a soloist at the District Music Contest for two (2) years.
- The student must have participated in a non-conducted ensemble for two (2) years at the District Music Contest.
In the event of a tie, the District and State Music ratings, and All-State status will determine the winner. Should there be a tie, the winner will be determined at the discretion of the director.
School Publication
Business Cup Criteria
The Business Cup will be awarded to the student who has taken the greater number of business classes provided the grade point average is not lower than "3.8'. The student must also have completed a minimum of ten (10) semesters of business classes.
Business classes taken at Hillyard Technical School will not count toward the Business Cup.
The following criteria will be used to break ties and will be considered in the order listed below:
- Quarterly grades in business classes.
- Participation in school business organizations.
- Participation and achievement in district and state business contests.
- Application of knowledge in business classrooms.
Oak Cup Criteria
The Oak Cup will be awarded to the student who has earned a "3.8' or above grade point average and who has met the following requirements:
- The student must have served on the Oak Staff two (2) or more years.
- The student must have participated in all areas of producing the yearbook. This includes selling, planning layouts, copy work, meeting deadlines and distribution of the yearbook.
- The student must have willingly participated in all activities related to the yearbook.
- The student must have been willing and able to stay after school to complete material for deadlines.
- The student must have assisted others when they were behind in their work.
- The student must have shown the ability to be a respected leader, as well as a good follower.
Spotlight Cup Criteria
The Spotlight Cup will be awarded to the student who has met the following requirements:
- The student must have served on the Video Announcements Staff two (2) or more years.
- The student must have participated in all areas of the production of video announcements including filming, editing, and on camera.
- The student must have willingly participated in all activities related to the video announcements.
- The student must have been willing and able to stay after school to meet video announcement deadlines.
- The student must have assisted others when they were behind in their work.
- The student must have shown the ability to be a respected leader as well as a good follower.
Science
The Science Cup will be awarded to the senior student who has earned the most Honors Science credits and met the following requirements:
- The student must complete Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Physics.
- The student must be enrolled in Honors Science classes all four years of high school.
- The student must earn a grade of B (84%) or higher for each credit to be considered.
In the event of a tie, the following criteria will be used to determine the winner:
- Highest overall Science GPA
- Achievements in science including special recognition for participation in Chemathon, clubs, internships, Upward Bound, and/or Marine Biology.
- Collaboration between science department members.
In the event no senior meets all the criteria, there will be no science cup awarded for the year.
Honors science credits will include the PLTW courses as science elective choices.
Social Studies
The Social Studies Cup will be awarded to the student with the highest grade point average in Social Studies classes over 8 semesters. The student must have completed at least one elective in the social studies department.
The following criteria will be used to break ties and will be considered:
- Number of semesters of Social Studies classes.
- Involvement in social studies activities such as DPS and National History Day.
Speech
Debate Cup Criteria
1. The Debate Cup will be awarded to the student who has who has met the following requirements:
- The student must have been competed in Competitive Drama for at least 3 years.
- The student must be a letter winner in Debate in multiple years.
- The student must be a member of the National Forensics League for at least three years.
- The student must accumulate a total of at least 250 NFL points.
2. In order eligible for the Debate Cup the student must be:
- Actively competing on the LHS Competitive Speech and Debate Team during his/her senior year.
- In good standing with Lafayette High School and the SJSD.
- Continuously acting as an outstanding ambassador for the LHS Competitive Speech and Debate Team, LHS, and the SJSD.
3. Tie breaker will be based on NFL Debate Points.
Forensics Cup Criteria
1. The Forensics Cup will be awarded to the student who has met the following requirements:
- The student must have competed in Competitive Speech/Forensics for at least 3 years.
- The student must be a letter winner in Speech/Forensics in multiple years.
- The student must be a member of the National Forensics League for at least three years.
- The student must accumulate a total of at least 250 NFL points.
2. In order eligible for the Forensics Cup the student must be:
- Actively competing on the LHS Competitive Speech and Debate Team during his/her senior year.
- In good standing with Lafayette High School and the SJSD.
- Continuously acting as an outstanding ambassador for the LHS Competitive Speech and Debate Team, LHS, and the SJSD.
3. Tie breaker will be based on NFL Forensics Points.
Sports Marketing
Sports Marketing Cup Criteria
The Sports Marketing Cup will be awarded to the student who has met the following requirements:
- The student must have been in Sports Marketing 2 or more years
- The student who has worked the most broadcast and events.
- The student must have participated in all areas of the production of video broadcast and creating sports marketing content.
- The student must have willingly participating in all activities related to Sports Marketing
- The student must have been willing and able to stay after school to broadcast and work media days.
- The student must have assisted others when they needed help or training.
- The students must have shown the ability to be a respected leader as well as a good follower.
Technical Theatre

Has taken and received a quarter grade no lower than a "B" in the following classes:
- Technical Theatre Productions
- Theatre Arts I
- Advanced Theatre
- Honors Theatre
- Musical Theatre
- Improv Performance

Has participated as a technician in the most productions/event sponsored by LHS Theatre Department.

Points Distribution:
- Full Point:
- Stage Managing (1 point/act)
- Semester of classes listed in #1 (1 point/sem).
- Running Crew (Lights/Sound/Spotlights) for all non-Theatre Auditorium Performances (i.e. Choral, Band, Orchestra Concerts)
- Running Sound for all Varsity Gym Assemblies
- Half Point:
- Running Crew for full stage performances (i.e. Musical, 2 Act Play, ½ per act)
- Member in Thespian Society
- Officer in Thespian Society
- Full Point:

In order to be edible for the cup, student must be:
- An active member of the Lafayette High School Theatre Department during senior year.
- In good standing with Lafayette High School and the SJSD.
- Currently participating in the LHS Theatre Program.
- Continuously acting as an outstanding ambassador for the LHS Theatre Program, LHS, and the SJSD.

Tie Breaker: In the event of a tie, the student with the highest GPA in the above classes will win.
Theatre

The Vocal Music Cup will be awarded to the student with the highest grade point average in vocal music classes and who has met the following requirements:
- The student must have completed six (6) semesters in vocal music classes.
- The student must have no semester grade lower than a "B" in any vocal music class.
- The student must have participated as a soloist at the District Music Contest.
- The student must have participated in a non-conducted ensemble for two (2) years at the District Music Contest.
In the event of a tie, the District and State Music ratings, and All State Status will determine the winner. Should there still be a tie, the winner will be determined at the discretion of the director.
