DRUG FREE SUPER STAR
This innovative program was implemented in the St. Joseph public schools during the 1993/94 school year. The Super S.T.A.R.s are chosen at each individual school. They are selected through an application and interview process. The selection is based on being drug-free and of outstanding character.
The S.T.A.R.s visit their elementary feeder schools and talk with the students about their choice of leading a drug-free lifestyle, motivation and goal setting, as well as the importance of academics as they relate to athletics. In 1997, through the generosity of the Harry F. and Helena B. Messick Charitable Trust, and with the bank as trustees, twenty-four $250 college scholarships were established to recognize the Drug Free Super S.T.A.R.s.
